Josh Cannon, PhD, served on active duty in the USMC from June, 2000 to June, 2005. He was an Arabic Cryptologic Linguist (MOS 2671) and deployed to Iraq twice, first with the invasion in March of 2003, and a second time in summer 2004. He received his honorable discharge with rank of sergeant in 2005.

After the service, Josh went to the University of Pittsburgh where he received his Bachelor of Philosophy degree in Anthropology and Linguistics in 2010. He then went to the University of Chicago with a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship where he received his PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, with a focus on Anatolian archaeology.

Following his graduate studies, Josh started working for the Frederick Honors College of the University of Pittsburgh. He started as a fellowship advisor in 2018 and is now the Director of Research. At Pitt, Josh is also an adjunct faculty member for the Classics Department and the Anthropology Department. He also became an Executive Editor for Rhea Classical Reviews.

Josh is married to Anne Marie Sweeney and together they have three children.
